SUNSTROKE

My last Moving Painting, 1992, produced by Juanjo Arzubialde

SURVEILLANCE

In the early 90s a set of aerial surveillance photos fell into my hands. I pasted them on to canvases as backgrounds for paintings. The internet and subsequent questions about invasions of privacy hadn’t materialized yet but these images felt meaningful. Looking at them it became obvious to me that a technological surveillance of private lives was imminent and at the same time that it would be arbitrary.
Kazuto Ohira, a Hiroshima survivor, was a friend and collector who organized my first show in Tokyo in 1992. I’m painting his portrait on a surveillance background.
In 1997 I filmed Mr. Ohira talking about his experience with and survival of the bomb in 16 mm. That film material was stolen. In 2007, one year before his death, I re-filmed my interview with him a park in Tokyo.

PAINTING 1975 - 1980

During this early phase I focused on bodies and faces.
Some works I developed into three-dimensional objects. Expanding on their spatial qualities I took them out into the streets creating „Temporary Installations“.
